Square Enix, known for iconic JRPG titles like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, has ventured into the world of blockchain technology by collaborating with a leading metaverse investment firm for the development of a crypto-based NFT game.
Collaboration Details
On Monday, the collaboration was officially announced, with Square Enix partnering with Animoca Brands to enhance the marketing strategies for their upcoming game titled “Symbiogenesis.” This game is accompanied by a collection of 10,000 unique Ethereum NFTs.
Animoca Brands Japan will provide support by leveraging its expertise in the expansion of Japanese products globally, NFT sales, and fostering partnerships with other companies under the Animoca Brands umbrella. Kensuke Amo, COO of Animoca Brands Japan, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating,
“Animoca Brands Japan is pleased to be working with SQUARE ENIX, an entertainment company that provides world-class content and IP that Japan can be proud of.”
Game Overview
The game, Symbiogenesis, is a narrative-driven adventure set in a post-apocalyptic high fantasy realm. Players will assume the roles of their Ethereum NFT avatars and immerse themselves in a world where they can interact with other in-game NFTs on the Polygon network. Possession of an NFT is mandatory for accessing the Symbiogenesis game.
Symbiogenesis unfolds on a floating continent in a dystopian future version of Earth, where humans combat mythical creatures for survival, including battling a formidable dragon. The game will be integrated into Animoca Brands Japan’s forthcoming NFT launchpad, slated to launch in the summer, supporting both Ethereum and Polygon.
This collaboration is not the first between Square Enix and Animoca. In the past, Square Enix participated in an investment round for the popular NFT game “The Sandbox,” where assets from its Dungeon Siege franchise were featured. Moreover, Square Enix ventured into the world of NFTs by releasing Final Fantasy VII-based tokens on Polygon and investing in Bitcoin gaming platform Zebedee.
Recently, Square Enix made separate investments in Hyperplay and Elixer Games, further solidifying its commitment to the blockchain gaming space. Naoyuki Tamate, Producer of Symbiogenesis, expressed eagerness about the partnership with Animoca, stating,
“We are very excited about this initiative and look forward to working with Animoca Brands Japan to bring the Web3 experience to a wider audience in an even more strategic way.”
