The South Korean pro golfer Lee Ye-won recently made headlines by winning a KLPGA Tour event in Busan and walking away with a crypto prize worth over $457,000. The tournament, called the WEMIX Championship, was sponsored by WeMade’s crypto and blockchain gaming subsidiary.
The KLPGA tour, known for its fierce competition and talented women golfers, is considered a major rival to the LPGA tour. Lee’s exceptional performance, finishing the two-day championship five under par with a score of 67, earned her the first-place title and 250,000 WEMIX tokens as her prize.
WEMIX, the gaming firm behind the tournament, contributed a total of 1 million tokens, equivalent to approximately $1,828,000 at the time, as the “money” prize for the tour. The company also embraced the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) by distributing NFTs to the golfers who made the cut for the second day and issuing NFT tickets.
The event took place at the Haeundae Beach Golf and Resort, a picturesque par 72 course located in Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Lee, a talented 20-year-old golfer, currently holds the 34th position in the global golf rankings by Rolex, but her recent victory may elevate her rank even higher.
