The Fight Against Terrorism Financing: Binance Collaborates with Israel’s Ministry of Defense

Collaboration in Counterterrorism Operation

Binance has recently announced a significant collaboration between its Sanctions Investigation Team and Israel’s Ministry of Defense in a joint effort to combat terrorism financing. The operation specifically targets Iranian and Hezbollah terrorist groups, focusing on tracking down terrorism financing operations linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp, Quds Force.

This collaboration showcases Binance’s commitment to ensuring security within the global crypto and blockchain ecosystem. The exchange actively collaborates with global law enforcement agencies and regulators to combat illicit cyber financial crime and prevent the actions of bad actors.

“Through its collaboration with the Israeli defense ministry, Binance aided in seizing millions of dollars in cryptocurrency stolen by Iran’s Quds Force for terrorism financing.”

– Binance Blog Post

Binance’s Sanctions and Counter-Terrorist Financing Investigation team played a crucial role in identifying the terrorists involved and thwarting their operation. It is important to note that the team focuses solely on sanctioned entities and does not target innocent cryptocurrency users.

Following the successful crackdown, Israel’s National Bureau of Counter Terror Financing (NBCTF) and Israeli National Cybercrime Unit commended Binance’s team for their contribution to maintaining global security. Binance also expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the operation against the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force.

Combatting Financial Crimes

The current cryptocurrency landscape presents vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious actors for illicit activities. While market regulations might still be evolving, Binance ensures strict monitoring and detection of suspicious and sanctioned accounts to prevent bad actors from compromising the crypto market.

Binance’s Investigations team has extensive experience cooperating with law enforcement agencies in fighting financial crimes. According to the recent blog post, they have been involved in over 47,000 cases with law enforcement agencies, resulting in the freezing and seizure of over $1 billion in illicit transactions and funds. In 2021 alone, they have managed to freeze and seize $900 million.

To further strengthen their efforts in combating financial and cybercrimes, Binance has established a global Law Enforcement Training Program. This training program aims to provide assistance to law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in detecting financial crimes and effectively prosecuting those responsible.

Cryptocurrency and Terrorism Financing

Terrorist groups have increasingly turned to cryptocurrency as a preferred medium for laundering illicit funds and financing their operations. The anonymity offered by crypto transactions has made it enticing for these groups to circumvent traditional financial systems.

One notable example is the North Korean Lazarus Group, a notorious cybercrime organization known for stealing user funds from crypto firms. It is estimated that Lazarus Group has stolen billions of dollars in cryptocurrency from various protocols.

Law enforcement agencies in different jurisdictions, including the European Union, are actively working to prevent terrorists and criminals from exploiting cryptocurrency to evade anti-money laundering laws.
